Summary

This week we're talking about the proposed cuts and layoffs at West Virginia University, and to do it we've enlisted a damn platoon. First we have Dennis Hogan, a postdoctoral fellow at Haverford College, who has an article in The Baffler this week about the WVU situation (link below). Then we have two grad students at WVU, Bethany Winters and Christian Rowe, who are involved in the union (@westvirginiaunited on Instagram, @wvunitedsu on Twitter). Finally we have writer and professor Glenn Taylor (@GlennTaylorBook on Twitter), who teaches in WVU's creative writing department. Check out Dennis Hogan's article here: https://thebaffler.com/latest/capture-the-flagship-hogan To contact the board of governors [email protected] To contact the provost [email protected] To contact the vice president of strategic initiatives [email protected] Petition for vote of no-confidence in Gee: https://www.change.org/p/support-wvu-assembly-resolution-of-no-confidence-in-gordon-gee Petition to save creative writing program: https://www.change.org/p/save-wvu-s-mfa-program-preserve-the-future-of-creative-writing-education?utm_medium=custom_url&utm_source=share_petition&recruited_by_id=90780690-c462-012f-672a-4040acce234c

Hello, Trailbilly family. For this week's show, we have convened a group of

0:06.2

teachers and students to talk about the proposed cuts at West Virginia

0:12.2

University. And I think you're going to find it both enlightening and in

0:17.8

raging. But before we get into the details, I need to alert you all to two

0:23.5

developments that have taken place since we recorded this episode earlier in the

0:28.2

week. The first is that Monday, the chair of the faculty Senate announced

0:33.7

that a faculty assembly would be held Wednesday, September 6th at noon at the

0:39.6

Clay Theater in the Center for Creative Arts on the Evansdale campus. We

0:46.0

mentioned this in the show towards the end, but I just wanted to reiterate it up

0:51.7

top. I think the assembly will be considering two motions, one calling for

0:56.5

the freezing of the academic transformation process. Again, we talk about that

1:01.4

in the episode and what that means. And the other is a vote of no confidence in

1:06.9

President E. Gordon-Gee. We talked a lot about Gee in this episode. There are

1:12.9

some choice clips of him that I managed to cut into this episode that I think

1:19.0

you will. Again, find both enlightening and in raging. The second development I

1:26.4

wanted to mention was that yesterday, the first round of decisions on

1:31.2

appeals were made to the academic transformation process. And the

1:36.9

administration decided that it will go ahead and forge ahead with its cuts,

1:42.0

including the dissolution of the world languages department. This was in my

1:48.9

opinion, I'm editorializing here, but this was I think particularly heartless.

1:53.6

This is some faculty found out about these decisions through online press

1:57.2

releases, rather than from the university itself. And I'm quoting here from
