Summary

It was only a matter of time until Hurdle had a hurdler (of sorts) on the podcast. Colleen Quigley didn’t grow up dreaming of going to the Olympics to compete in the steeple chase. After joining the track team her freshman year of high school and finding her fast, the St. Louis native geared up for a collegiate running career at Florida State University that would eventually lead her to turn pro as a Nike-sponsored athlete. In the year prior to the 2016 Summer Games, Quigley dealt with a major #hurdlemoment—a nasty hamstring injury—that almost derailed her from hitting the track in Rio. In episode 30, I sit down with the Bowerman Babe to chat her ever-evolving dreams, a brief stint in modeling, and how it feels to be a role model for young athletes around the world.

yesterday back in New York City from recording this with her over the weekend in Portland,

where I joined my friends at Nike to check out the Nike Cross Nationals, which is the high

school championships for cross country. I've got to admit, it was surprisingly emotional for me to see. All of the camaraderie

and the bravery and the dedication of these high schoolers. It was, it was really special. Before we

Now, let's talk about Colleen. The first thing to throw out there is that this 26-year-old

1:18.4

definitely didn't grow up dreaming of going to the Olympics to compete in the steeplechase.

1:23.2

And if you've never heard of the steeplechase before, well, you're certainly not alone.

1:29.0

It's essentially a 3,000-meter obstacle race, and each lap of the track has four barriers or

1:34.5

hurdles and a water pit.

1:36.6

After joining the track team, her freshman year of high school and finding her fast, the

1:40.5

St. Louis native realized she really had a knack for this running thing. She landed herself

1:45.3

a scholarship to run at Florida State University, and despite being mega successful, she still

1:51.1

was hesitant to turn pro. But soon enough, she was relocating to Oregon to run as a Nike-sponsored

1:56.7

athlete with the Bowerman Track Club, gearing up for the 2016 summer games.
