Hello. Welcome to the Pirate History Podcast. My name is Matt. Thank you for listening.

As I suspected might happen, today's episode grew unwieldy almost immediately.

I tried to give these little biographical introductions to our main players, just a sketch really, but that grew into a whole extra episode that had even less to do with pirates than what we've got here today.

There were also some explanations of positions within Roman civic life that aren't really important, but again would help us to understand our characters.

However, again, that would have made today's episode way too big. So instead we're just going to jump in in the year 71 BCE.

This is episode 299, 2, Pompey and the Pirates.

71 BCE was the last year of the Third Survile War. That's the war in which a bunch of enslaved gladiators, led by a man named Spartacus, rebelled against their masters.
