In October 1536, the north of England was in open revolt.

0:17.1

Tens of thousands of rebels had taken up arms against the banner of the five

wounds of Christ, calling themselves pilgrims and demanding a return to the old ways. The king's

0:28.7

new religious policies had stirred up more than sermons. This was war, and Eleanor Clifford,

0:34.4

Countess of Cumberland, found herself caught right in the middle of it.

0:38.8

She was at Bolton Abbey, a quiet monastic retreat about ten miles from Skipton Castle.

0:44.1

With her were her young son and two of her sisters-in-law.

0:48.5

It was supposed to be a safe place, far from court, far from trouble.

But Eleanor, unfortunately, wasn't just any noble

0:57.6

woman. She was a niece of Henry VIII and the rebels knew it. When they found her, they made zero

1:04.3

effort at politeness. Eleanor and her family were taken hostage. The insurgents sent word to her

1:10.3

father-in-law at Skipton Castle,

1:12.6

surrender the fortress, or will hand these women over to the camp followers. And the implication

1:18.4

was not subtle. It was violence against women as a political threat, and Eleanor, despite her

1:24.9

royal blood, was expendable. The standoff didn't last long. Her father-in-law,

1:29.7

furious and alarmed, rode straight into the rebel camp and negotiated their release.

1:34.6

Eleanor, her sisters-in-law, and her child were brought safely back to Skipton. The siege was lifted

1:40.4

five days later. She didn't write about it. There's no first-person account,

1:49.0

no dramatic testimony, but the fact that rebels saw her as valuable enough to threaten,

1:55.2

and the Earl risked so much to get her back, tells us something. Eleanor Brandon mattered,

1:58.1

even if history has largely forgotten her.
