Last time with the Allied Forces having lost Eastern and Southern Burma,

a change in leadership was clearly needed.

Hence General Sir Harold Alexander, the new CNC of Allied land forces in Burma,

called on General William Bill Slim to take command of the actual fighting.

Slim flew in from Iraq, stopped in Delhi, and then finished up the last part of his journey

at Akgab, modern day sit-way, a small port on the Iraq and coast of Western Burma.

There he talked with Lieutenant General Morris, the Chief of General Staff in India,

and Air Vice Marshal Stevenson, Air Officer, Commanding in Burma.

Between this conversation and what Slim already knew, he quickly figured out that air power

would play a vital role in this war as there were few roads.

However, and this would be barred out, he guessed that air power alone would not determine the

victor. Basically, he came to the same conclusion as General Vinogar Jo still well, just from the

opposite direction. Even worse, after looking at a map, Slim saw that Burma's major

airports were not only lined up north to south, but were on the eastern side of Burma,

all easily within range of Japanese aircraft. And their locations meant those airfields
