John was born in 1945 in Berkeley, California, and raised in the suburb of El Cerrito.

He developed his love for music from a very young age and credits his mother Lucille for sparking his interest in songwriting.

When he was around 3 or 4, she played him O Susanna and Camptown Races, making a point of informing her young son that they were written by Stephen Foster.

Later, when he was around 10, John heard the Elvis B-side My Baby Left Me playing on a jukebox in a general store in Winters, California, and decided there and then that his future lay in rock and roll.

He picked up the guitar around the age of 12,

specifically a Dan Electro silver tone from Sears, I believe, and while at high school

formed the covers band called the Blue Velvet's with bassist Stu Cook and drummer Doug Clifford,
