Summary

Jesse Cody had never hiked until he read Bill Bryson's book, "A Walk in the Woods." Something within the book spoke to him, and he saw a thru-hike as a way forward from some of his mental health issues. The result was a revelation, and Jesse devoted his days to helping others with some of the same issues.

We spoke last week with Randi Silverman of the Youth Mental Health Project and Jesse is supporting that charity by raising money on the PCT. Jesse's website, https://hikethegoodhike.com/, brings awareness and information on mental health to hikers everywhere. The man is truly on a mission.. On the home page of the site, Jesse says "My feet have carried me over roughly 7500 miles of trails throughout the United States, and now I'm sharing my journey to bring awareness to mental health through wilderness exploration."

Today we have a kind of follow-on to last week's show when we spoke with Randy Silverman of the Youth Mental Health Project. Randy beautifully set the scene for today's show by telling us about the remarkable story of Jesse Cody, the Boston Mule. She didn't tell you about why he's a

Boston Mule and I think you're going to get a kick out of exactly who the Boston Mule is to Jesse.

1:12.5

I'm not going to go over everything we said last week. Instead, I want you all to meet Jesse and I hope that you listen

carefully to what he has to say about his hike, his mental health, now the one benefited the

other. Here's Jesse. So my guest today is unusually not somebody I've already spoken to about our interview.

He's out hiking the PTT right now, so this is going to be one and done.

Great, Steve.

1:46.2

Thank you. Thanks for getting me on your show.

Well, I know you're out there now, so it's now 11.30 on a Sunday morning for me, so it's 8.30 in the morning for you. And I know that's for hikers who want to get out there. They just want to get going. So I'm glad we're having a chance to chat. And I should warn you all, all the listeners,

2:05.7

and normally when you have a trail name,

2:09.5

that trail name reflects something stupid you've done on the trail or maybe you've named yourself.

2:10.9

But I want to warn you, the Boston Mule is very much a part of this story,

2:14.9

probably as much as Jesse Cody.
