Last time, not only had the Malay and Peninsula and Singapore fell,

the latter on February 15th, but also the Celebes and Maluku Islands before the month was out.

Yet the Japanese Empire was not done.

As the Allies were at a low point, it was paramount to grab as much territory as they could,

to access materials that the Americans would no longer sell to them, like oil,

but also to deny that resource and others to the enemy, like rubber, tin, and the anti-malarie drug, quainine.

But more than that, Tokyo wanted a solid wall of occupied islands and territories to stime the Allies.

When the time came and the Western powers tried to retake their lands,

the Empire would make them bleed in the process, and only then would negotiations begin.
