Hello and welcome to the History of Japan podcast, episode 277, The House of Cards, Part 5.

As we discussed last week, the Onan War Both was and was not the end of the Ashkaga Bakfu.

On the one hand, Ashkaga prestige was irreparably tarnished by the damage done to the capital and by the seeming inability of the Shogun to control fighting within the streets of a city he supposedly ruled.

On the other hand, there would still be an Ashkaga Shogun claiming to rule all of Japan for 100 years after the Onan War.

And as we've mentioned, private war between families was nothing new or particularly

groundbreaking by the standards of the Ashkaga period. So this week, I want to focus on that

final century and on what the twilight of the Muromachi Bakfu looked like.
