I believe it was Machiavelli, who said it's better to be feared than loved.

I don't know if that's true or not, but I do know this.

Georgia fans, over the course of a period of years, certainly loved the way in which their defense was feared.

Although you might say in recent seasons, that hasn't quite been as true.

I don't know that Georgia's been bad defensively.

In fact, I'm quite so sure it hasn't been, but it probably hasn't been as impactful as it could be.

And some of that feels like a natural byproduct of measuring Georgia against its own unfair standard.

The 2021 defense, I would say arguably, is the best in college football's history.

Certainly, it's recent history.

And anything in comparison to that is obviously going to pale.

But there is still this sense of even compared to the very best defenses in college football in a given

year, there is just some element for Georgia that's maybe been lacking just a little bit.

And it's not necessarily measured by points per game allowed. Georgia's not terrible in a

category like that. It's not even necessarily measured by like say yards per play allowed allowed Georgia's not terrible in a category like that it's not even necessarily

you start looking under the hood a little deeper sacks and tackles for loss and interceptions and

fumbles recovered you just see almost no impact from Georgia whatsoever.
