I have to clarify something so last week we talked about typologists and we were we were talking about

0:08.6

we're talking about like the different things about typography and I made the comment that if people haven't been to an

0:15.8

art school or to taking art classes or type classes, they may not understand the

0:22.1

things that were in the type menu in Photoshop or illustrator.

0:26.7

What I meant was that they may not have the vocabulary to look at that and understand what each one of those

0:32.3

things mean.

0:33.0

Not that you're not incapable.

0:35.0

And somebody sent me a message and they took offense, it seemed like they took offense to me

0:40.0

saying that because they were able to learn it on their own

0:43.0

and they kind of rejected the idea that you had to go to school

0:45.0

to be able to learn those things.

0:46.0

That is absolutely not what I meant.

0:48.0

What I meant is sometimes within any given skill set or like a thing that you want to learn there's

0:55.7

there's kind of like custom vocabulary that's built into those things like the

0:59.8

word kerning you wouldn't know the what the word Kearning meant from going through elementary

1:04.9

in middle school, right? Because that's just not a word that is relevant in anything else other

1:09.7

than typography that I'm aware of. So not that you don't understand what

1:14.4

Kearning is, but you may not have the association of the word and the

1:19.1

definition until you get exposed to it by somebody teaching you, which I think is what we were trying to do last week was like,

1:25.0

hey, here's some things that you can know so you don't have to go to school to understand what these things mean.

1:30.0

So I was not at all saying that you have to go to design school to be able to do good type or to understand it.

1:36.8

That was just, yeah, got misunderstood, so I wanted to call that out.
