Summary

The show this week features interviews from four hikers who Ryan was able to meet with at Rock Gap in North Carolina, mile 105.8 on the Appalachian Trail. All four interviews offer different perspectives, and each has a unique story to share about their hike. This is Gandalf.

By complete luck, he crossed paths with Nimblewill Nomad, and got to chat with a real legend in the long-distance hiking world. Nimblewill started his AT hike in Flagg Moutain, Alabama and has already completed the Pinhoti Trail and the Benton MacKaye Trail connecting to the AT at Springer. When Nimblewill reaches Katahdin this season, he will be the oldest person to complete the AT at 83 years old. Check out his website and blog here: https://nimblewillnomad.com/

about hikers for everybody. Mighty Blue on the Appalachian Trail, the ultimate midlife crisis, joins Stephen his guests every week as he staggers from Georgia to Maine.

Hi everyone, thanks again for coming back to Mighty Blue on the Appalachian Trail, the ultimate

0:39.5

midlife crisis. Once again, my name is Ryan Hopkins or JR. And I'm filling in for Steve or

0:45.6

Mighty Blue while he's on a bit of a sabbatical, which has been good the last few weeks if you've

0:50.5

been tuning in. So you may have noticed already by the title that today's

0:55.3

episode is going to be a little bit different. And that's what we wanted to try with this

1:00.4

kind of new season of the show. We wanted to try getting some interviews on the trail itself of

1:05.5

current hikers. You know, people always mention they enjoy hearing current hikers and their stories and what's going on on the trail at the moment.

1:14.4

So whether that be through following a hiker or through blogs or through YouTube, that's always a popular thing.

1:19.3

So to be frank, and I wasn't exactly sure how this was going to go.

1:24.3

I actually, you know, called Steve and asked if he had any advice or wisdom

1:28.1

on where to head to or what to plan for. And he said very specifically to me, if you put a

1:35.0

microphone in front of people, they'll usually talk and they'll usually share. And people are

1:39.8

pretty generous with their time. So I just went with that. Since I'm based in Asheville, I was looking

1:46.1

for some areas on the trail that were drivable. And so I was looking into the Franklin area,

1:52.1

winding stair gap area, and I kind of thought that, you know, winding stair gap, it's right there

1:56.6

on a major road. It's a ton of people coming in and out. It'd be a lot of road noise and would

2:01.3

probably be a lot of people trying to get into town, get out of town, get back on the trail.

2:07.0

I don't know. It didn't feel like it would be the best spot to get interviews. In hindsight,

2:11.9

probably would have worked just the same. When I drove by, it was pretty packed, as you can

2:16.1

imagine. But it ended up going to rock gap, which is just a few miles below winding stair gap or south of
