So as we've talked about before, discussions surrounding Japan slide into militarism or Japanese fascism,

or as one of my colleagues put it once jokingly in a reference to another East Asian

turn of phrase that obscures more than it reveals, fascism with Japanese characteristics,

well, those discussions can be very tricky.

For one thing, precisely dating a turn to fascism is a lot harder than it is in Europe.
