Summary

Brittany Briley's smile lit up the trail in 2019, and we first met at Woods Hole Hostel. A nurse by training, she felt that the time was right to take a break in her early 30s and hiked the Appalachian Trail as joyously as anybody I met out there.

We didn't hike together much but, as is the way of the trail, we often saw one another. Brittany shared part of the trail with the sadly missed Pony Keg and his dog Blue.

Eventually, Brittany teamed up with previous guests on this show and she summited with Cushy Life, Turd Ferguson, and Shark Tooth, along with Runaway Jim. As she'll tell you, they laughed relentlessly. Knowing these people, I can well understand it.

If you'd like to read Mooney's blog, here it is: https://www.hiketotheheart.com or follow her on Instagram at https://www.instagram.com/hiketotheheart/

Sandi Marra speaks on behalf of the ATC with regard to their JEDI initiative. If you'd like to learn more about this, go to https://appalachiantrail.org/our-work/about-us/jedi/

We're back on with Katie Westling as she counts down to her start date in less than two weeks. This week, Katie surprises me by how similar our gear is.

Katie's YouTube channel is at

Finally, Larry Luxenburg's Walking The Appalachian Trail continues this week's theme of strong women on the trail.

Hi everybody and thanks for joining me again on Mighty Blue on the Appalachian Trail, the ultimate midlife crisis.

0:41.3

Funny enough, I may well be having a midlife crisis now.

0:45.5

Well, maybe a late midlife crisis or even an early old age crisis because I've got an announcement

0:50.2

to make today.

0:51.5

I'm going to come to that later because we've got another full show to share with you. I met Brittany Briley or Mooney in 2019 and as she will tell you, it was at

1:01.1

the ethereal Woods Hole Hostel. She was a very chirpy, very positive young woman who

1:05.7

always seemed to have a smile on her face, even on the toughest days. She took a lot from the

1:10.4

trial, though as you're going to

1:11.4

hear, trial also took quite a bit from her. Mooney will be on in a moment. After Mooney, we're going

1:17.7

to be having our ATC segment, and this time it is the head honcho herself, Sandy Mara. Sandy is

1:23.6

talking about Jedi again, and she takes the opportunity to tell me of during the interview

1:27.7

so that is certainly something not to be missed. After Sandy, as you can tell it's an all-woman day,

1:33.7

Katie Westling or Phoenix Rising will be telling us about the gear she's chosen. In fact it turned out

1:38.7

to be very much along the lines of much of the gear that I had in my 2019 hike. She's done a lot of

1:44.0

research to optimise her chances when she hits the trail the week

1:47.1

after next.

1:48.7

Finally, and sticking with the female theme, Larry Luxembourg talks about women and couples

1:54.2

on the trail.

1:55.5

As this was written in a, let's say, pre-PC era, he's called the chapter,
