On this episode of Nuts World, the origins of the Memorial Day date back to 1868.

Commander-in-Chief John A. Logan of the Grand Armour of the Republic issued General Order

No. 11, designating May 30 as a Memorial Day quote, for the purpose of struelling with

flowers or otherwise decorating the graves of comrades who died in defense of their country

during the late rebellion and whose bodies now lie in almost every city, village, and hamlet

churchyard in the land.

In 1971, an act of Congress changed the observance of the holiday to the last Monday in May and

extended the honor to all soldiers who died in American wars.

Today, national observance of the holiday still takes place at Arlington National Cemetery

with the placing of a wreath of the tomb of the unknown soldier and the decoration of

each grave with a small American flag.

So well, many Americans think of it as a weekend that marks the start of summer parades and

backyard gatherings with family and friends.

Please also remember why Memorial Day was established, to honor those men and women who gave their

life and service to our country and to protect our freedoms.
