Summary

I first met Rob Landry (virtually) when he reached out partway through his 2020 thru-hike attempt. He was thinking about writing the book of hiking during a pandemic and wanted a little publishing advice. So it delighted me to hear from him when he finished his 2020 hike and I invited him on the show.

The finish, however, wasn't what I expected, and nor will you.

If you'd like to see more of Rob's hike, check out his Instagram account at https://instagram.com/flybynighthike

Leanna Joyner is the Program Director for Volunteer Relations and in this week's "Discovering the ATC segment," she shares with us the myriad ways that you can volunteer to help YOUR trail. "Volunteering on the A.T.: From Recreation to Stewardship" is the title they gave me, so I dove in to find out more. If you'd like to help out, go to https://appalachiantrail.org/get-involved/volunteer/, and Leanna or one of her colleagues will point you in the right direction.

Bill Tickner continues to weave his way south, enjoying every minute as he closes in on his Triple Crown.

And Fozzie, in Balancing on Blue, discovers the boundaries he's unable to cross when a member of his tramily requires a somewhat closer inspection than Fozzie is prepared to give.

Hi guys, and thanks so much for coming back to the show.

You're listening to Mighty Blue on the Appalachian Tril, the ultimate midlife crisis, which is somewhat appropriate as I'm currently experiencing my own technical crisis right now as I've been putting the show together. If you're hearing it, it must have kind of worked out, though I'll definitely need to make some changes for next week. I suspect there's going to be some, I don't know, spooky sound differences, but we just have to see how it turns out. Still, you need and worry about that. You just need to sit back and listen to our show. Today we have Rob Landry, or Fly By Night. Rob's another member of the class of 2020, and we actually communicated earlier in the year when he was partway through his hike. he was talking about writing a book on hiking in the year of the class of 2020 and we actually communicated earlier in the year when he was partway through

his hike. He was talking about writing a book on hiking in the year of the pandemic and he was asking

for some kind of publishing advice. Well, when he concluded his hike this year, he reached out again

and I invited him on the show. He's got a really refreshing attitude and I think you're going to

enjoy his story, though it does have something of a surprise ending. Rob will be along soon. After Rob this week, I've got the second in our

segment of discovering the ATC, with Leanna Joyner telling us about the volunteer opportunities at

ATC. Then, Mr President is in Virginia and about to do the Virginia Triple Crown. Finally, Fossey is back with his book balancing on blue, where the team have reached the whites. So let's get on and meet Rob Landry. You may hear a bit of crackling from time to time. I'm not sure what was happening. I've seen to have all the sound grimace at the moment. But Rob may have been fiddling with his mic or a bit of paper. It isn't too bad, though.

Here's Rob.

So let's meet today's guest. He was a member of this year's class of 2020. This is Rob Landry or

Fly by Night. How are you, Rob? Doing well, Steve. Great to be here.

2:19.0

Well, good to have you on the show.

2:22.8

And first off, why on earth were you fly by night?

2:25.8

Not many people have three names.

2:33.1

Yeah, well, I had a friend who hiked the AT a few years ago, and he said, well, you know,

2:43.0

you might want to come up with your own name just to have one ready to go rather than have someone give you a name that you might not particularly want.

2:50.3

So shortly before I left for my hike, Neil Pert, who's the drummer from the group Rush, passed away.

And it reminded me back when I was in high school, I was in a garage band with good friends of mine.

3:00.5

And Fly by Night was the first song that we learned how to play by Rush.
