Hello, and welcome back to another episode of the Feminist Mormon Housewives podcast.

I'm your host, Lindsay, and we're bringing you another episode in our series, A Year of Polygamy,

for the Feminist Warren Housewives podcast where we're exploring the,

we're dedicating the whole year to exploring the practice of plural marriage as it applies to Mormonism,

both in our past and present. And we're still in

Navu right now. We're stuck back in the 1800s. We've now moved up into the 1840s, and we are

talking about the wives of Joseph Smith right now. If this is your first time tuning in, I would recommend that you start with episode one with Fannie Alder

and work your way up from there.

Today, though, we're talking about Lucy Walker Smith.

She is a controversial figure in this story

because Joseph would marry her very, very young.

And before we get started, I want to

define our terms a little bit. I want to make it clear that when we talk about this story,

often people say, thorough accusations like Joseph Smith was a pedophile. And let's be clear

that pedophilia has a very specific definition, which means being attracted to prepubescent children.

And there is absolutely no evidence to suggest that Joseph was attracted to prepubescent children.

These children were in their teens. They were probably somewhat developed,

so that is just not a term that should be used or applied to these scenarios. And although there

are problems with child brides.

Joseph Smith did not invent this practice.

I'm not apologizing for him marrying young children.
