Summary

Elon Musk is having a normal one on Twitter -- banning journalists who reported on the "Elon Jets" account that posted information about the location of his private plane, prohibiting links to sites like Mastodon & Instagram, and issuing polls asking the public whether he should step down from Twitter. (As of writing, more than 8 million have voted -- and he's losing.) It's a perfect time to talk to internet policy expert Evan Greer about legislation pending in congress that might help ensure some degree of the consistency and transparency that Elon promised, but has not yet provided. We discuss Parler, PayPal, & app store tyranny; the hypocrisy of Alejandra Caraballo's condemnation of right wing violence after calling for SCOTUS members to be "accosted," post-Dobbs, and more.

Part of this is also, frankly, about the center left and also the US left being incredibly

0:07.8

naval gazing and not having global awareness. Ask a Palestinian how they feel about PayPal

0:16.3

and their content moderation practices of the past. I always say, if you've never been part

0:21.3

of an organization that's had your account frozen by PayPal, you're probably not actually as much

0:25.9

of a leftist. That's the thing that happened. PayPal has shut down. PayPal has shut down. I remember

0:31.2

when the Leonard Palette years for committee had their PayPal account frozen. Numerous Palestinian

0:36.4

organizations have had donations frozen. Palestinian organizations have experienced disproportionate

0:42.7

censorship on social media platforms, dominant social media platforms. There's a big campaign

0:47.7

around that over the last number of months led by Smex and Hamla and Empower Justice and

0:54.1

a number of other Muslim Arab groups in the US and globally. We actually have data that shows that

1:00.1

the most censored group of people on social media is not conservatives or Republicans. It's

1:05.6

Arab and Muslim folks who live outside the US who speech is routinely censored by automated anti-terrorism

1:12.1

filters that often basically label normal religious speech, like just like a quote from the

1:18.3

Quran or something like that as being terrorist propaganda. This is the type of stuff that we just

1:23.2

don't talk about enough. The right is kind of off their whining and be like, we're so censored.

1:28.6

And in a weird way, we've almost accepted that frame where they're like, yeah, they're the most

1:33.0

censored. Like, haha, fuck them. Yeah, I mean, should be exactly. They're actually not the most

1:37.7

censored. It's black and brown activists, it's trans folks, it's Arab and Muslim folks, and

1:43.6

predominantly it's sex workers. And like that's the group that just is the most consistently ignored

1:50.4

by the center left in the US is sex workers who have been explaining how these social media

1:57.3

moderation practices are weaponized against them over and over and over again and just largely

2:01.8

being ignored by organizations who are more interested in censoring the other side. Right.
