And Ross Barkin, a journalist, you know him from his excellent substack and also writing for New York Magazine. Welcome back, Ross. Thank you for having me. Glad to be on again. Ross, I pulled you in because first and foremost, you've been covering these New York races so closely. There's a lot that's gone on in New York in the context of midterms has become an

unexpectedly significant state. I'm a little unsure where to start, so let me just lay out

the lay of the land so far. For one, there was an unexpectedly strong challenger to the Democratic

governor in an ostensibly blue state. A Trump Republican really leaned into the fearmongering around crime

and people think had some success on that basis. Hocal leaned into that as well and there's

been a lot of conversation about whether or not it was an effective strategy, although she

managed to pull it out and went on the end. Additionally, the red wave that many people thought

was going to materialize did not. And Democrats actually stood a chance of potentially even holding

onto the House. Nothing settled yet. But it looks unlikely that they will do that, even though it's
