I'm very excited to be joined today by Coleman Hughes, who is a writer, a podcaster, and

as I recently learned a musician.

It's great to be here.

So, Coleman, I think the way most people know you as is probably because you are one of

a relatively small number of black conservatives.

And the black conservative occupies this weird space and the American imagination, like all

black people who don't vote for Democrats, and this is something that I obviously have

experienced.

There is something akin to a revulsion that is often directed to us.

I think because we have been a part of one of the most consistently loyal demographic

groups for the Democratic Party.

So much so that when black people don't vote Democrat, there is the implication that we

ain't black in the parlance of the President of the United States of America.

Of course, there's a difference between the valence of my reasons for not being a Democratic

Party, and your reasons for not being a Democratic Party and being a Republican are so

different.

So just as by way of introduction, I wondered if you could talk to me a little bit about

how you came to your politics.

So for starters, politically I'm an independent.

I've only voted twice for President, and I voted both times for Hillary and for Biden
