Before we begin, I know we've spoken before, but could you briefly explain your primary role here at ECDC?

I've been working at the ECDC since 2018 as a principal expert for preparedness and response in the EPRS section.

And in the last few years, I've been heavily involved in the public health emergency for COVID and currently for monkeypox.

Okay, so we are talking today about the current monkeypox outbreak.

Can you give us a bit of background on monkeypox?

So like what is it and where did it originate?

Yes, so monkeypox is a tropical disease.

And in the tropics, it infects people through contact with animals, mainly. And this could be either

bites or preparing what we call bushmeat in Africa, like little animals that are caught,

hunted and caught for food, preparing bushmeat for eating. And then what we used to see is small
