Duran were founded in Birmingham in 1978 by John Taylor and his friend Nick Rhodes and Stephen Duffy later of the Lylek time.

Their moniker was inspired by the character of Dr Duran Durand in the cult 60s movie Barbarella.

Their formative influences included the Sex Pistols, Bowie, Shee, and Roxy Music.

With Roger Taylor on drums, they began performing as a band in 1979, recruiting Simon Lebonne on vocals and guitarist Andy Taylor the following year.
