Minds of Madness Podcast. Listener discretion is advised. Oh, In 1965, Sports Illustrated magazine ran an exotic story about a new leisure sport that was becoming all the rage in the kingdom of Thailand,

invented by a princess no less.

As the story goes, a beautiful princess purchased 100 intert, and invited her neighbors to join her in

floating down a river that flowed through her enormous property.

Before long, hundreds of locals were flocking to the royal estate to join the princess on the river,

and a brand new pastime was born.

To make the story even more exciting, the authors made sure to include an element of danger.

They wrote about infamous bandits who were known to prowl the jungle along the river's

bank.

To keep the princess safe, they claimed she never went tubing with an unarmed escort

of bodyguards.

Residents of Somerset, Wisconsin, however, knew better than the editors of Sports Illustrated.

They knew that 25 years earlier, the true birthplace of River Tubing was in fact the Apple

River, a lazy, meandering river that flows through Somerset

into the much larger St. Croix River, forming the border between Minnesota and Wisconsin.
