In the seven years separating one Mongol invasion from another, Hojo Tokimune was far from idle.

Indeed, reading the histories of this time,

nothing impresses me more than the supreme confidence and energy Tokimune exhibited,

particularly considering his relative youth.

I feel like it's important to emphasize again just how young he was.

I mean, Hojo Tokimune was 23 when the first invasion force landed,

and he had to face the decision between war with the seemingly unstoppable Mongols and capitulation.

When I was 23, the most impressive thing I did was organize a move from New York to Seattle, the most logistically complicated bit of which

involved some Google searches and phone calls to rent an apartment. I cannot imagine having to organize

a war to save an entire island from invasion. His confidence seems only to have increased in the

wake of his first victory, because Tokimune very quickly
