And so what a stay behind agent is is somebody who stays behind when an invading force comes in and either

works on a partisan or resistance movement

who captures or not captures but rather rescues down pilots. This was a huge component of the French resistance

during the Second World War or

relay his information to a government that's at war with the occupying powers and so this was a tactic

that is that that was actually used to really good effect especially in France and

So in the aftermath of the Second World War

This was and in fact the declining days and well really during a lot of the Second World War

There were certain elements of the OSS and SOE who were on the lookout for men who might make good stay behind agents in the event of another European war with let's say

maybe a different power than Germany. Yeah, and the you know the way that you know

We talked about the way that in Germany these structures got integrated into the German state in a very formal way

You know within the broader European context

Who is going to be the most fervent anti-communist?

It's going to be fascists and neo-fascists and I think that that even amongst you know even amongst people in the OSS

And then later in the CIA who you know, we're not themselves fascists

Although many of them are you know worse even amongst those fascists. Yeah, exactly even amongst those who weren't they

Saw no problem using these elements because they understood this is who's gonna be motivated to actually fight

Yeah, if it actually came to that and then of course that's get you know to get beyond the pretext of

Defighting us a Soviet invasion who's gonna be willing to pull the trigger on their own, you know fellow countrymen

You know for for our political purposes is gonna be these far right wing elements and that is still the case to this day
