James was born in Wigan in the northwest of England in 1980 and grew up in the town of Chorley.

He loved singing from a very young age and started playing guitar and keys when he was around 14.

He listened a lot to the charlatans, Oasis and Jeff Buckley in his youth, as well as

amersing himself and his dad's Neil Young and Springsteen records.

He eventually began writing his own songs and after leaving school went on to study

music at Wigan and Lee College, where in 1996 he met future band

Major James Stelphox and Ben Byrne, who played together in a band in their native

Warrington. They first heard our guests sing when James stepped in for them at an end of term concert for another singer who'd taken help.

They were duly impressed and invited into a rehearsal and the first incarnation of what would become Star Saila was born.

The band was originally called Morph, then Waterface. Upon the recruitment of keyboardist Barry Westhead in 2000, James also took up guitar duties and the line-up has remained the same ever since.

They began to build a cult following and having rechristened themselves StarSaylor after the 1970

Tim Buckley album played a London gig in April 2000 which was glowingly reviewed by James Oldham of the enemy.

Such was the influence of said publication at the time. This led to a label

Bidding War and the band signed to EMI later that same year.
