Welcome home cojourners. I'm glad you're here for another episode of the Homecoming podcast. I'm Dr. Tama, a licensed

yourself. And we're going to start today as we do every week with a poem.

0:22.6

And this week's poem, it's going to be an excerpt from Nikki Giovanni,

0:26.6

and the poem is called The Blues.

0:29.6

Some folks think the blues is a song or a way of singing,

0:34.6

but the blues is history, a way of telling how we got here, and who sent us?

0:41.3

1:48.8

I want you to think about on today your own song. What do your blues sound like? What is the story

1:59.2

they tell? Not only the story of your individual life, but your

2:03.5

intergenerational life, your ancestral life. What are the stories that led to your story? What is the

2:11.5

story of your yesterday? What is the story you are creating today? And what do you hope will be the imprint, the prophetic mandate for your story on tomorrow?

2:22.8

And so as we think about the narratives, our stories, and consider the blues, I thought that poem was perfect because our topic on today is healing emotional pain, healing emotional pain.

2:39.2

And heartache and heartbreak are real. They can be devastating. They can shift us and turn

2:47.9

our worlds upside down. We feel it deeply. And a part of the feeling it is
