When I first encountered Game of Thrones, it was at a library book sale in 2004.

The copy I found was a first edition hardcover with a broken spine.

There is no mention within the text or on the

cover of any plans for additional novels, so for two read-throughs of Thrones, I thought of it as a

standalone novel. It was 2004, we didn't even have YouTube yet. I was amazed by this vignette into

this living and breathing world. It was intoxicating to read, and the ending was a promise of possibilities.

As a result, every novel or short story we've gotten since then has felt like a gift to me,

another glimpse into the world. Do you believe Game of Thrones works on its own as a standalone

novel? How do you think this perspective could inform our understanding of the series if it ends
