It happened on a warm spring evening in May 1666 on the coast of the Spanish province of Panama. The merchant ship Concord lay

at anchor in the harbor at Portobello. Her goods, her crew, and her captain, Henry Wazey, were all English.

They were fully licensed and legitimate.

The Treaty of Madrid had sealed the peace between England and Spain, and the Concord had no cause for worry over the two countries

former tensions. The crew spent the evening relaxing,

gambling, sharing a jug of rum and talking mostly about how they

were going to spend their wages. In the morning the crew was to begin unloading all of their

cargo onto the dock. However, they would never get that chance.

As the sun sank below the horizon, a boat rode toward the Concord, filled with armed and

angry Spanish soldiers.

These soldiers climbed on board and arrested the crew and captain on charges of spying.

The captain was not a spy.

If he were, he would be better informed.

He would likely have heard of the ship that had recently sailed into harbor

under a flag of truce that brought the militia of old Providence into the port at Portobello.
