Tony Brown, NBA referee, lost his battle with pancreatic cancer yesterday.

I got to know Tony pretty well. He was an amazing person. I'm not even

going to really talk about him as a referee. I mean he had in 2020 elevated his career where he worked in the NBA finals so that tells you

all you need to know about Tony as an official and I want to just share some thoughts about officiating and Tony listen I'm a

sports fan just like you and I get upset at officials just like you and when

there's an egregious call I get on the officials just like you and when there's an egregious call I get on the officials just like

you but I always remember that they're not robots they don't have instant replay like we have when they make a call. They're making it in

real time and over the years I've become very friendly with a lot of officials in various sports both not only both but all sports the

national football league I've gotten to be good friends with Mike Pereira in the

national hockey league I was very tight with Paul Devorsky, a long-time

NAHL official that had worked the Stanley Cup finals. In the NBA, over the
