Summary

In this podcast, Mark Sisson discusses the popular Primal Blueprint concept of the 80/20 rule, which is often misinterpreted and manipulated to compromise dietary quality. Sisson explains that the spirit of the 80/20 rule is to strive for 100% compliance with Primal guidelines and maximum nutritional value of your diet, but to accept the imperfections and limitations of your food choices. The common excuse of having difficulty finding quality meals away from home is countered by Sisson’s strategy of practicing Intermittent Fasting when healthy options are not available. Sisson also mentions the flip side of being too obsessed with Primal perfection, and experiencing increased stress from an overly rigid approach. He also talks about society’s distorted perception of ideal body composition, urging you to focus on your own personal peak performance potential and enjoyment of life, instead of struggling to adhere to the sensationalized standards of models and elite fitness specimens.

Thanks for being back here. Today, I think we should

talk about the 80-20 rule, which was one of the principles you laid out in the primal blueprint.

It's really resonated and become a popular discussion topic at your live events and also

0:35.3

possibly a little misunderstood, perhaps. Well, yeah, it's interesting to see what

0:40.5

people write about on the internet regarding the use and abuse of the 8020 rule. Originally,

0:47.3

the 8020 rule was there because, you know, we had this saying on Mark's Daily Apple,

0:51.9

don't let the perfect be the enemy of the good, that you

0:55.0

should strive for 100%, and if you ultimately arrive at 80-20, you've still succeeded. So don't

1:01.2

beat yourself up for those few mistakes that you make in trying to be compliant with all of the

1:06.8

things on the primal blueprint, and particularly know, the 10 primal blueprint laws.

1:12.0

Over time, it would appear that the 80-20 rule has been kind of absorbed into the paleo community

1:17.8

as, well, it's okay, I'm paleo or primal 80% of the time and I'm not 20% of the time. And

then when you look at their food charts, it looks like they're actually being quite generous.

1:28.0

They're probably primal 60% of the time and not 40% of the time.

1:31.5

So there's a tremendous amount of leeway with this 80-20, but the original intent was try to be as compliant as possible.

1:39.9

And on those days when you make a mistake or fall off the wagon,

1:44.6

just get right back up and get on.

And as long as you, in retrospect or 20%,
