Good morning and welcome to the Increase Rampack podcast. I'm Justin's episode 2174. Everyone says that success

leaves clues and that is true. But what most people don't talk about is how failure leaves clues as well.

I once asked a coach who's a friend of mine how he became such a strong leader. I admire the way he

connects with players and he's

very good at casting the vision and coaching and having that nice balance between warmth and challenge

when it comes to working with his players. And his answer surprised me when he said that

he learned how to be a great leader from every bad coach that he ever had.

He said that he noticed the way that they treated people and he told himself that if he were ever

to become a coach himself, he would do the opposite. He remembered the coach who humiliated

players in front of the team, the coach who showed up unprepared,

the coach who cared more about power than people. And then he quietly made a promise to himself,

I'll never do those things. And it reminds me of a simple formula when it comes to failure.

So failure leads to feedback, feedback leads to knowledge, and knowledge leads to

improvement. Failure to feedback, feedback to knowledge, knowledge to improvement. Great leaders don't run

from failure. They study it. They ask what went wrong? Why did it happen? How can I make sure

myself and our team doesn't repeat it?

Because they believe that making new mistakes is making progress in disguise, something we talk about often.

And they help those they lead to have the same belief.

Success leaves clues. It does. But as a leader, failure might leave even better ones.

And the best leaders and coaches and team captains and parents and bosses don't just

learn from their victories. They mind failures for wisdom and use it to come back better.
