Good morning and welcome to the Increase Your Impact Podcast. I'm Justin Sua, episode 2087.

As coaches, we've all experienced this phenomenon. A player makes a costly mistake in a big moment,

and suddenly we start seeing them differently. Or a player hits a clutch shot and now all of a sudden we trust them completely,

even if the bigger picture tells a different story.

This is called the availability bias,

our tendency to put too much weight on the most recent or the most dramatic moments rather than looking at the full

body of work. But it's human nature. Our brains are wired to latch on to what stands out the most.

But if we're not careful, we start coaching the moment instead of coaching the whole player.

One bad turnover and a player becomes reckless.

One poor practice and we start questioning their work ethic.

But on the flip side, if a player nails the last second shot,

then all of a sudden we label them as clutch,

even if they miss that shot most of the time.

These snap judgments that we have don't just shape our opinions.

They actually shape the way we treat people, the way we treat players, the way we treat

And we start pulling back minutes or changing roles or coaching with hesitation, all because one moment, that one moment

that stuck in our mind.

It's not just about them.
