Hey, good morning and welcome to the Increasing Impact Podcast. I'm Justin Sua, episode 2019. I was

0:05.9

recently talking to someone who has a lot on their mind, and we discussed an analogy that really

0:12.9

helped them out. The analogy was that of a laptop. I said, the more tabs you have open in your

0:19.2

laptop, what happens to the operating speed of that

0:22.2

laptop? And he goes on to say it goes slower. And I said the mind is very similar to that.

0:28.5

The more tabs we have open, tabs could be things at work, things at school, things with your family,

0:34.0

doing the dishes, getting your dry cleaning. The more tabs that we have open, the slower our

0:38.8

decision making our processing speed is. You might be an athlete and you might be focused on so many

0:44.5

things that you can't lock in on the most important thing. As we always say, the main thing is to

0:50.7

keep the main thing, the main thing. And the corollary principle is when you have many

0:55.3

priorities you have none and so i invited him to identify which tabs are the most important

1:02.1

which ones are the ones that he needs to keep open so that he can close all the other ones

1:07.9

so that he can ultimately perform at a higher level mentally and be able

1:12.9

to make faster decisions. He made the decision, closed the tabs, and he was able to focus and make

1:20.5

his decisions a lot quicker. So my question to you is, what tabs do you have open that are clogging

1:27.1

your cognitive, cognitive load that are

1:29.8

hindering decision making and ultimately hurting your performance identify what's open

1:34.9

identify what you need to close and one of the way to close some things is in some things

1:40.3

you got to ignore and then other things is accomplishing the task you might have this open loop

1:45.5

this open tab of sending that email the only way to close it is to not ignore it but just send that

1:51.3

email make that call send a text do those little things that might be taking a lot of space

1:56.7

in your mind that you just need to accomplish have a great day and we'll do it again tomorrow
