Summary

While we normally focus on Appalachian Trail thru-hikers, Kimberly Brookshire's story was too good to miss. She had spent the early part of her career in fashion and wanted to experience something completely out of her comfort zone. Eschewing the Appalachian and other long-distance trails, Kimberly went for the lesser-known Mountains To Sea Trail.

This proved to be the perfect segue between her previous life and a new one that she discovered. But Kimberly's story didn't end when she reached the end of the trail in the Outer Banks. She was enjoying the life that she was leading and appreciated the person she had become through her adventure. So she did it again, eventually completing a yoyo of the trail, becoming only the third person and the first woman to do so. Craig Griffiths of Misty Mountain Inn provides hikers with a wonderful place to rest their heads early on the AT. I stayed there on my 2019 thru-hike and thoroughly appreciated the experience. Craig tells us what the cabins have to offer the weary traveler. Find Craig and his inn at http://mistymtninn.com/

Paul Stutzman's Hiking Thru has reached New York, with its delis and a shelter dubbed by Paul's friend, Fargo, as the Pharmacy Shelter.

I want to wish you all a very, very happy hiking new year from Mighty Blue on the Appalachian Trail, the ultimate midlife crisis.

This year won't be as hiking rich as 2019 was for me, but I hope to at least hit the AT for a few days with the fat guys and girls back in the woods, as well as try out the West Highland Way back in the United Kingdom.

0:55.9

I'm also hoping to get to trail days in Damascus this year, so I hope to be able to meet plenty of you along the way.

1:01.1

This week's show is slightly unusual as it doesn't feature an Appalachian Trail through hiker,

1:05.8

though Kimberly Brookshire did start a through hike on the AT at Klingman's Dome.

1:10.3

She then headed east on the

1:11.5

Mountains to Sea Trail in North Carolina and had an extraordinary adventure that did not stop

1:16.2

at the Outer Banks. Kimberley will be along soon. We have another hostel owner this week, though

1:21.7

this is a bit of a step up from the word hostel and I'm sure you'll enjoy hearing from

Craig Griffiths of the Misty Mountain Inn, one of my special places this past year.

1:29.9

Finally, Paul Stutzman's hiking through has reached what his buddy Fargo referred to as the

pharmacy shelter.

1:37.0

I wonder if any of you who know the shelters will know which one he's going on about.

1:41.0

By the way, apologies once more to Paul and Fargo for my pathetic Fargo voice. Add to the fact that I had a bit of a sore throat this week, the apology is doubled. Now, before I totally ruin my voice, here is Kimberly Legs at Brookshire. A young woman whose story I heard from one of you listeners, so please, if you know of any hikers who have a story, reach out to me at Steve at HikingRadionetwork.com.

Now let's hear from Kimberly or legs.

I'd like to introduce you to a guest who started a through hike from the highest point on the Appalachian Trail in 2016 at Clemonds Dome.

2:21.4

But this wasn't an AT through hikes.
