Spaley Hello. Welcome to the pirate history

podcast. My name is Matt, thank you for listening.

To begin today I need to get something out of the way, right off the bat. I like westerns,

the movies, old westerns, less the classic John Wayne White hat black hat westerns. In

fact, I might actually kind of hate those movies, but everything from the 70s spaghetti

westerns on I really enjoy. They're filled with criminals and injustice and anti-heroes

and shades of gray. Many of the same things that drew me to pirates are there in the westerns.

My first cowboy movie was Young Guns 2, starring Emilio Westivas as perhaps the most famous

outlaw in the Old West. Billy the Kid. And if I don't just acknowledge right here at the

outset that Billy the Kid, Alias William Bonnie, was a Scottish American outlaw with a name that was

notably similar to our subject today. If I don't get that out of the way I'm just going to

fill the episode with terrible out of place jokes or maybe even do something like construct

an entire episode around the career of Billy the Kid. You don't want that I don't want that.

None of us want me to pepper in songs from the very first album I ever bought with my own money.
