Summary

As you're no doubt aware, there is some *truly* awful legislation making headlines lately. These bills and laws not only severely impede teachers' ability to, well, teach, but also make educators vulnerable to lawsuits for simply talking about race and gender issues in the classroom. It's real Handmaid's Tale stuff. To better examine how dire the situation is, we brought on two *tremendous* queer teachers, B (they/she) and Andie (they/them), who hail from Pennsylvania and Ohio respectively. They candidly discuss what the passage of legislation like Florida's "Don't Say Gay" bill would mean for them as educators and individuals. We dive into Critical Race Theory, get real about teacher burnout, and say the word "nefarious" A LOT. Most importantly, we learn how we can support America's teachers at this critical time.

Follow (and support by re-posting!) our two amazing guests:
B is on Instagram at @betweenunreadlines
Andie is on both Twitter and Instagram at @andie_the_enby

Hey y'all.

Hi.

Welcome to Coming Out with Lauren and Nicole. We are a weekly podcast where we have queer folks on from all walks of life. They tell us the tales of how they came out to friends, family, and the world at large.

Because who doesn't love a coming out story slash current day issues in our queer community?

0:24.9

Yeah. And so in case you hadn't already guessed based on what Lauren said in the deviation from our

0:30.7

normal intro, today is one of those days where we will be deviating from our regularly scheduled

0:36.9

program to bring you

0:38.2

current day issues affecting our community and other communities that intersect with our community.

0:43.9

Yay!

0:45.5

Today, I mean, like, it's going to take all of my power not to just, like, explode in my seat

0:52.0

because I'm so fired up about what we're talking about today.

0:56.0

We are joined by the wonderful Beebe and Andy Jay, both teachers in Ohio and Pennsylvania,

1:07.2

respectively. And for those of you who don't know out there, there are some horrendous

1:13.4

bills and now legislation laws that are coming down through many states from the Conservative Party,

1:23.6

restricting what we, what teachers are allowed to teach in schools.

1:28.9

But basically, these bills do not want issues of, really LGBTQ issues in general,

1:38.9

but specifically trans issues and issues of race that cast white people in a less than good light in modern times

1:49.1

to they do not want them to be discussed. And modern times is also a very important, like,

1:55.8

contemporary versus history is a very important distinction in these, that essentially they're saying it's

2:02.2

fine to talk about slavery and civil rights as long as we know that that's the past and

2:07.4

America's not racist now. Like that's essentially what these are saying. So it becomes very

2:14.0

tricky because it's then like, well, how do you talk about, let's say, the Black Lives Matter movement without talking about what's happening right now that all is related to the beginning of the country till now, et cetera.
