Summary

Since this was Annie's show last week, it's only fair that Chris gets a turn, too! He's thoughtfully prepared four sets of discussion-based course curriculum just like he would for one of his classes at Florida State--in fact, two of them are adapted from courses he's actually taught. These curated lists of five books each are centered around asking questions. Perfect for book clubs! The ranking Annie mentions at the top of the show can be found here. The 'Other' Mother (for fans of That Kind of Mother) + Dear Ijeawele by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie + The Mothers by Brit Bennett + Marriage of a Thousand Lies by SJ Sindu + The First Bad Man by Miranda July + Rabbit Cake by Annie Hartnett How to be a Human (for fans of Station Eleven) + Brave New World by Aldous Huxley + Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury + A Canticle for Leibowitz by Walter Miller, Jr. + Never Let Me Go by Kazuo Ishiguro + The Handmaid's Tale by Margaret Atwood Florida, O Florida (for people who wonder how we live here) + Best. State. Ever. by Dave Barry + Swamplandia! by Karen Russell + Sunshine State by Sarah Gerard + Florida by Lauren Groff + Annihilation by Jeff VanderMeer Small Town Living (for fans of A Man Called Ove) + Jayber Crow by Wendell Berry + This is Where You Belong by Melody Warnick + The Little Bookstore of Big Stone Gap by Wendy Welch + The From-Aways by CJ Hauser + Beartown by Frederik Backman Thanks, as always, to Forlorn Strangers for the use of our theme music. So my favorite thing on the internet recently, and maybe you've seen this.

0:06.7

I'm not going to be able to remember the name of the website, but this website put out the 100 best TV episodes of the 21st century.

0:16.4

I think it's like the past 30 years or something like that.

0:20.3

And what I loved about it,

0:22.1

The Ringer, that was the website that found out was the ringer. So they asked their staff

0:27.1

to each bring to the table like some of their favorite TV episodes. Right, like not a show,

0:32.8

but a specific episode. Specific episode. And then when they compiled this list of 100,

0:40.3

each show could only get one episode. Okay. And then when they compile this list of 100, each show could only get one episode. Okay.

0:41.3

So the office could only get one episode.

0:42.3

ER could only get one episode.

0:45.3

And what I loved, just the experience of reading this article was fantastic because you read

0:51.3

the thinking behind why a particular staffer chose this episode, but it also,

0:57.3

it's an audio visual experience too because they're showing a clip from the episode. It's just

1:02.8

really well done. So it's this fantastic article that I thoroughly enjoyed, but it really got me

1:08.9

thinking because some of the episodes, like, I'm not sure if those are the ones I would have picked.

1:15.4

So, for example, what do you think the best episode of the American The Office is?

1:20.1

Or what's your favorite?

1:23.5

I have a real fondness for the first threat-level midnight episode, although I wouldn't say it's maybe the best, but it is one of my favorites.

1:34.2

Dinner party is really, really up there.

1:39.1

Office Olympics is an early favorite.

1:41.6

Office Olympics is so good.

1:44.1

What did they pick? What was yours? So my favorite is the injury. Injury is very good. Where Michael, like, I just think that's so clever where he clamps his foot into the foreman girl. And when he puts his foot into the MRI machine at the end, I lose it every time. And the whole episode, or much of the episodes, you're thinking, what's wrong with Michael? But really, of course, there's something on with Dwight. I think it's really well done. But the episode that the ringer picked or that the ringer staffer chose was the dinner party. Which I did not disagree with. We just re-watch that episode recently, and it's so solid. Okay, what about ER? but it has to be 21st century has to be
