In the spring of 1664, the future of Jamaica sailed across the Caribbean.

That future was embodied in Sir Thomas Modi Ford.

The ever-changing world of European politics had shifted drastically in the nine years of English occupation in Jamaica.

Lord Protector Cromwell had died, the Stuart monarchy had been restored under King Charles II,

and the Anglo-Spanish war that had seen Jamaica seized from Spain was over.

The two nations were finally at peace.

That peace, however, stood on an uncertain foundation.

King Charles had been backed by many prominent certain foundation.

King Charles had been backed by many prominent Catholics in Europe in his bid for the throne,

most notably the King of Spain.

He secured that support largely with a promise to return Jamaica to the Spanish Empire.

However, he didn't. He changed his mind and there was little that Spain could do about it.
