continue our story of the Noestra Signora de la Concepcion. Now I would understand if you were asking yourself

exactly why we're talking about this ship from the 1640s. Why are we doing it now?

Aren't we talking about the 1690s and the nine years war and New England? Well yes, yes we are.

This is episode 175, the vocabulary of despair. When we left off last time the

1641 Treasure Fleet had just departed Havana. They did so on the 20th of September, a full month after the latest acceptable date to do so.

The Concepcion, formerly the flagship of the fleet, but downgraded to Vice Admiral

and replaced his flagship by the Saint Pedro, while she was in poor shape.

The crew discovered a pretty serious leak in her hull only a few days earlier,

but they patched that up back in Havana.

Perhaps though most concerning of all was the captain of the Concepcion.

Juan de Via VicincoCinco was not a seafaring man.

He was a financial expert.

I characterized him as a banker. And I don't mean to disparage his character not on that basis at least.
