Summary

Briana Bosch is the founder of Blossom and Branch, where she manages a two-acre flower micro-farm in Denver and a 180-acre family grain farm in Minnesota. With a background in journalism and a master's in marketing, she has become a prominent voice in the regenerative movement by focusing on scaling soil health concepts for both small-scale market gardens and large-scale commodity operations.

Last year marked a significant milestone in her transition of the family's century-old Minnesota farm, as she implemented intensive regenerative practices for the first time, including the total elimination of herbicides and fungicides on her experimental acreage.

In this episode, John and Briana discuss:

  • The role of authenticity and maintaining the "true voice" to build lasting trust

  • Her transition from using plastic mulch and netting to implementing living ground covers and high-carbon mulches like wood chips

  • How flower production can net a higher profit per acre than almost any other crop, including marijuana, when focused on local markets

  • The benefits of 60-inch corn rows for facilitating intercropping and cover crop growth within the constraints of a short northern growing season

  • Seed inoculation as the most effective "low-hanging fruit" for jump-starting soil biology and reducing synthetic fertilizer needs

  • The psychological and cultural barriers, such as "groupthink" and defensiveness, that often prevent farmers from adopting new practices

About John Kempf
John Kempf is the founder of Advancing Eco Agriculture (AEA). A top expert in biological and regenerative farming, John founded AEA in 2006 to help fellow farmers by providing the education, tools, and strategies that will have a global effect on the food supply and those who grow it.

Through intense study and the knowledge gleaned from many industry leaders, John is building a comprehensive systems-based approach to plant nutrition – a system solidly based on the sciences of plant physiology, mineral nutrition, and soil microbiology.

Support For This Show & Helping You Grow
Since 2006, AEA has been on a mission to help growers become more resilient, efficient, and profitable with regenerative agriculture.

AEA works directly with growers to apply its unique line of liquid mineral crop nutrition products and biological inoculants. Informed by cutting-edge plant and soil data-gathering techniques, AEA's science-based programs empower farm operations to meet the crop quality markers that matter the most.

AEA has created real and lasting change on millions of acres with its products and data-driven services by working hand-in-hand with growers to produce healthier soil, stronger crops, and higher profits.

Beyond working on the ground with growers, AEA leads in regenerative agriculture media and education, producing and distributing the popular and highly-regarded Regenerative Agriculture Podcast, inspiring webinars, and other educational content that serve as go-to resources for growers worldwide.

Hi, friends, this is John. Welcome to the Region of Agriculture podcast where we have all kinds of fun conversations related to growing things, growing healthy things, growing healthy people, growing healthy soil, growing healthy plants.

I'm delighted today to be joined by Bree from Blossom and Branch, who I encourage you to check out on YouTube and on Instagram for all the

0:22.1

awesome work that she's doing, both scaling up and scaling down these concepts and ideas

0:29.5

around growing healthier soil and plants and people.

0:33.4

Bree, thank you so much for joining me for Day and for being willing to have this conversation.

0:37.5

Give us some context for the scope of all the fun you have.

0:42.1

Yeah, thanks for having me, John.

0:43.2

I've been a fan of the podcast for many years.

0:45.5

It's informed a lot of what I do, actually.

0:48.0

So, yeah, I've got two farms.

0:50.8

So one is, you know, what we'd probably consider a micro farm.

0:56.7

It's two acres in Denver,

1:01.9

just outside of Denver, Colorado. And that is a flower farm. So that's the reason why it's small.

1:09.5

And flowers are cultivated, grown, harvested, pretty much primarily all by hand. And so scaling that up much beyond two acres with one person is difficult.

1:13.3

Then we also have in Minnesota, we have 180 acres in corn and soybeans. And that is a almost a

1:20.5

century farm in our family. So just just two years to go. And pretty conventionally farmed.

1:26.4

We've started taking chunks of that and converting it

1:30.1

over to regenerative. So adding a little bit each year as we kind of learn more about these

1:35.2

processes. So it's been really interesting adjusting and scaling things both up and down and

1:40.9

seeing what works in different climates and lots of different fun experiences.

1:46.4

And then you also do something that I think there are a number of, there are a number of farmers

1:52.5

who do this well, but many more who don't even attempt it at all. You talk to people. You talk to
