Summary

In this just-under-the-wire episode, Charles starts by talking about the Republicans' doublespeak on the debt: they insist that they want to balance the budget, but they don't want to touch any of the programs that are necessary to do so. Then, in the spirit of the hour, he talks to Vic Matus about his book 'Vodka: How a Colorless, Odorless, Flavorless Spirit Conquered America.'

Welcome to the Charles C.W. Cook podcast, episode 16, the one that got away.

0:29.3

This one is a little later than usual because I got swamped this week.

0:35.5

But here it is nevertheless.

0:41.3

Halfway through Friday, ready for the weekend,

0:50.3

Of course, the piece is full of all of the editorializing that you'd expect.

1:54.1

But the quotes, which are real, speak for themselves.

1:58.2

And sadly, those quotes are typical of where the party is at the moment.

2:06.3

So here's NBC.

2:08.8

Republicans newly empowered with a House majority are demanding spending cuts as a price for lifting the debt ceiling

2:16.9

and averting a catastrophic default on

2:20.6

US debt.

2:23.7

Now, just as an aside, I don't think there is anything wrong with Congress addressing

2:30.6

spending when lifting the debt ceiling.

2:33.7

I of course understand that the debt ceiling is being lifted

2:38.4

to accommodate the consequences of previous spending.

2:43.5

But it seems entirely natural to me
