Okay, Dessie. Well, this week we're going to be talking about a rapper who was on his way

to becoming the next big thing back in 1999 when a crime happened that completely derailed his career.

This is a wild story. I can't believe that it's been just over 20 years since this happened,

because I remember it like it was yesterday. Yeah.

And I'm sure you do too. I can't wait to hear the story.

So we are going to be talking about on this episode is Shine.

That is his stage name, of course, but he was born Jamal Michael Barrow on November 8, 1978,

to Francis Mivette and Dean Barrow. And he is of Ethiopian Jewish descent on his mother's side.

Jamal was born and believes where he lived until he was seven.

His mother, Francis, left Belize for Brooklyn for work. And when her son was three,

Jamal was taken care of by his father and subsequently his uncle until he ended up joining his

mother in the States just a few years later. His father, Dean, was a successful attorney who had

his own firm in Belize City. And by 1983, Dean Barrow entered politics, winning his race for

City Council. This was the start of a decades-long political career in Belize. Jamal's uncle,

Michael was also a politician. Now, life wasn't always easy for young Jamal Barrow growing up in
