When we last left the detailed telling of the civilian populace of Leningrad, Zhukov had

just saved the city with a series of counterattacks.

Stalin, the non-military man, was hoping for much more out of it than Zhukov.

Still, the Germans were beaten back, unable to take Volkov just below Lake Ladoga, unable

to get past Teppkin, nor link up with the reluctant thins on the south-eastern corner

of the lake.
