In 2017, my friend and I were on a squash hunt in Colorado, about six miles back into the mountains from Boulder. We would go in the

winter to avoid any black bear encounters, for safety and to eliminate any chance of mixing

up sightings. It was around two in the morning in February, deep in the Colorado Mountains.

We were ten miles from the nearest light source or human,

and ours was the only parked car at the trailhead.

We had reached our turnaround spot for the night.

On the way in, we had done a few howls and wood knocks,

but heard nothing.

So we decided to give up the search and just enjoy the hike.

Before turning back, my friend went to the bathroom off the trail near some trees.

I took the opportunity to look around in the snow for anything of interest.

The snow was patchy, but in one spot, I noticed a depression that stood out from the rest of the pack.

Upon closer examination, there was a distinct footprint in the snow.
