Summary

Reclaimed Rust: The James Hetfield Collection is an exhibit at the Petersen Automotive Museum in Los Angeles, California featuring 10 of Hetfield's custom cars as well as some unique Metallica gear and memorabilia. On January 30th, James attended the opening of the exhibit to sit for a "fireside chat" about his cars and Metallica. This was James' first public appearance since checking back into rehab in the fall of September 2019. On this episode we listen to the Hetfield interview as well as chat with friend and patron Edgar Barradas of California To Self-Destruct about the event itself, the cars, James Hetfield and the future of Metallica. Thanks to Edgar for providing the video and audio of the interview. Highlights include: - James remembering his dad working on cars - James learning to drive, his first car and the hot rod scene in Downey, CA - customizing his first car - joining the Beatniks Car Club and their influence - collaborating with builders like Rick Door and Scott Mumford - similarities between building cars and writing music - James' daily driver and the forthcoming book cataloging his cars - getting his first guitar and playing in Obsession - Meeting Lars Ulrich and recording "Hit The Lights" for Metal Massacre and Metal Blade Records - naming Metallica and designing the band's iconic logo - the future of Metallica
