Summary
Robert Verkerk, Ph.D., is an environmental scientist and the founder of the Alliance for Natural Health, with over 40 years of experience studying the interplay between human health, agriculture, and ecosystems. His work focuses on promoting regenerative agricultural practices and natural health solutions, emphasizing the need to reconnect food production with ecological and human well-being through science-based advocacy and policy reform.
His contributions to regenerative agriculture are vital because they bridge the gap between soil health, food quality, and human health, challenging conventional chemical-dependent farming models.
In this episode, John and Robert discuss:
-
The interconnectedness of human health, soil health, and ecosystem stability
-
The limitations of single-factor scientific analysis in understanding complex biological systems
-
The impact of corporate funding on scientific research and its bias toward chemical-based solutions
-
The role of epigenetics in plant and human health, highlighting the importance of environmental context
-
The inadequacy of assessing chronic pesticide exposure risks
-
The need for a new economic model that values natural resources like soil, air, and water

About John Kempf
John Kempf is the founder of Advancing Eco Agriculture (AEA). A top expert in biological and regenerative farming, John founded AEA in 2006 to help fellow farmers by providing the education, tools, and strategies that will have a global effect on the food supply and those who grow it.
Through intense study and the knowledge gleaned from many industry leaders, John is building a comprehensive systems-based approach to plant nutrition – a system solidly based on the sciences of plant physiology, mineral nutrition, and soil microbiology.
Support For This Show & Helping You Grow
Since 2006, AEA has been on a mission to help growers become more resilient, efficient, and profitable with regenerative agriculture.
AEA works directly with growers to apply its unique line of liquid mineral crop nutrition products and biological inoculants. Informed by cutting-edge plant and soil data-gathering techniques, AEA's science-based programs empower farm operations to meet the crop quality markers that matter the most.
AEA has created real and lasting change on millions of acres with its products and data-driven services by working hand-in-hand with growers to produce healthier soil, stronger crops, and higher profits.
Beyond working on the ground with growers, AEA leads in regenerative agriculture media and education, producing and distributing the popular and highly-regarded Regenerative Agriculture Podcast, inspiring webinars, and other educational content that serve as go-to resources for growers worldwide.

| 0:00.0 | Hi, friends, welcome to the Regenerative Agriculture Podcast. This is John Kempf, and this is where we have all kinds of fun conversations related to regenerating our soil health, our human health, and our ecosystem health, and constantly exploring how those are interconnected and interrelated. Our conversation today is one that I've been looking forward to for quite some time with Robert Verk. |
| 0:21.5 | When we're engaged in agriculture and when we start interacting with living systems, we |
| 0:25.2 | pretty soon figure out that it makes some type of sense for all of these systems to be |
| 0:31.1 | connected to each other and for human health, ultimately to be connected to ecosystem health |
| 0:35.2 | and to the health of what we're producing in our agricultural systems. |
| 0:38.3 | But many of us understand this intuitively to some degree, but Robert comes with the receipts. |
| 0:45.1 | And this is why this is going to be such great conversation. |
| 0:50.8 | So, Robert, I'd love for you to tell us, tell us a bit about your story, the journey |
| 0:55.5 | you've been on and the scope of the work that you're involved in. John, great to be with you. |
| 1:00.6 | My story is basically someone who's spent 40 years trying to understand nature and in that process |
| 1:07.6 | trying to understand humankind and the interaction between nature and human kind. |
| 1:13.6 | And that's taken me through academia. |
| 1:17.6 | I basically did my first degree in ecology. |
| 1:21.6 | I then, I basically became an environmental campaigner in Australia dealing with chemicals in the environment, particularly in agriculture, but also around other pesticides and other chemicals that were deemed to be safe by governments, but scientifically was already emerging that they had many health problems, |
| 1:47.5 | and we really created a movement, a people's movement, a grassroots movement of people who also |
| 1:54.0 | suffered from multiple chemical sensitivities, who were not being seen or heard by the medical profession. And we work closely with |
| 2:04.1 | the early movers and shakers in the, in the integrative medicine and functional medicine community, |
| 2:10.8 | people like Mark Donoghue, who really was the first to identify malgic encephalomyelitis, |
| 2:16.8 | M.E, multiple chemical sensitivities. |
| 2:19.3 | I was also, I am chemically sensitive. |
| 2:22.3 | It's been one of my big drivers towards natural living. |
| 2:27.0 | And so I did that for some 10 years, working with the Total Environment Center. |
