This is John Kempf, and this is where we have all kinds of fun conversations related to regenerating our soil health, our human health, and our ecosystem health, and constantly exploring how those are interconnected and interrelated. Our conversation today is one that I've been looking forward to for quite some time with Robert Verk.
0:21.5	When we're engaged in agriculture and when we start interacting with living systems, we
0:25.2	pretty soon figure out that it makes some type of sense for all of these systems to be
0:31.1	connected to each other and for human health, ultimately to be connected to ecosystem health
0:35.2	and to the health of what we're producing in our agricultural systems.
0:38.3	But many of us understand this intuitively to some degree, but Robert comes with the receipts.
0:45.1	And this is why this is going to be such great conversation.
0:50.8	So, Robert, I'd love for you to tell us, tell us a bit about your story, the journey
0:55.5	you've been on and the scope of the work that you're involved in. John, great to be with you.
1:00.6	My story is basically someone who's spent 40 years trying to understand nature and in that process
1:07.6	trying to understand humankind and the interaction between nature and human kind.
1:13.6	And that's taken me through academia.
1:17.6	I basically did my first degree in ecology.
1:21.6	I then, I basically became an environmental campaigner in Australia dealing with chemicals in the environment, particularly in agriculture, but also around other pesticides and other chemicals that were deemed to be safe by governments, but scientifically was already emerging that they had many health problems,
1:47.5	and we really created a movement, a people's movement, a grassroots movement of people who also
1:54.0	suffered from multiple chemical sensitivities, who were not being seen or heard by the medical profession. And we work closely with
2:04.1	the early movers and shakers in the, in the integrative medicine and functional medicine community,
2:10.8	people like Mark Donoghue, who really was the first to identify malgic encephalomyelitis,
2:16.8	M.E, multiple chemical sensitivities.
2:19.3	I was also, I am chemically sensitive.
2:22.3	It's been one of my big drivers towards natural living.
2:27.0	And so I did that for some 10 years, working with the Total Environment Center.
