On September 11, 2017, people were lined up and down the Oshawa pier, hoping to really catch during the peak of the annual salmon run.

The time of year when salmon leave, the chilly depths of Lake Ontario and journey upstream to spawn in the riverbeds.

It was here in the early evening when two fishermen spotted something drifting in the water.

At first glance, it looked like a piece of trash floating on the surface, so one of them began casting his line trying to snag it out of the water before the current pulled it farther away.

After a few attempts, he managed to hook the object and bring it closer.

But as he reeled it in, he became increasingly confused by what he was looking at.
