Summary

You might have noticed that over the last few decades, a lot of really exciting and famous fossil discoveries have been coming out of China. If you pay close attention, you might even catch that many of them are coming from the same place: the incredible fossil assemblages of the Jehol Biota. We’ve mentioned Jehol fossils many times on the podcast, but in this episode, we focus on the big picture: where do these fossils come from, why are they so incredibly well-preserved, and what are just some of the fascinating research questions we can answer by examining these amazing fossils? In the news: bird evolution, dinosaur growth patterns, mammal speciation rates, and glowing scallops. 0:27.9

We're back after a hiatus.

0:29.7

It didn't feel like a hiatus to any of you, but to us, it feels like a hiatus.

0:34.0

Yeah, it has actually been a month since we've recorded.

0:37.6

Yeah, you, you, as far as you're concerned, we were releasing stuff all through October,

0:41.2

but most of that, all of that was recorded ahead of time.

0:43.2

Yes.

0:43.7

So we're back.

0:44.8

This episode, our topic is the Jeholbiota, a world famous fossil ecosystem from China. We have done a bunch of fossil locality episodes in the

0:58.7

past. This one is very exciting because not only is it relatively more newly famous than some

1:06.0

of the other sites we've discovered, but also it has yielded some of the most famous fossils of our time.

1:13.3

Yeah, it's fascinating because it's not quite as, you know, common household of a name as like

1:19.8

Burgess Shale or Libreia, where these have been famous for decades and decades of decades.

1:25.1

This is a newer fossil site, you know, relatively speaking.

1:28.4

But you've heard of the discoveries from this site. We've mentioned this area, this, this ecosystem,

1:36.1

tons of times on the podcast, often when we're talking about dinosaur fossils, bird fossils,

1:41.8

fossils with feathers and soft tissue and coloration.

1:45.7

Tons of that stuff is coming out of the Jehole biota.

1:49.7

And in this episode, we will discuss what it is and where it is and some of the history of

1:54.4

discovery and what sort of awesome fossil remains have been found there.
