Summary

Every period of geologic time is distinguished by its own environmental and ecological features, and every boundary between time periods is characterized by change. The boundary between the Jurassic Period and the Cretaceous Period is mostly marked by mystery. Was there a mass extinction? Were there catastrophic changes? Where even is the boundary exactly? In this episode, we’ll discuss the answers – or lack thereof – to these questions and more as we explore this surprisingly enigmatic time in Earth history. In the news: croc conservation, diving whales, aquatic mammal-cousins, and sauropod feet. This episode, we are talking about the Jurassic Cretaceous transition.

0:33.8

Yeah.

0:34.3

A bit of an unusual episode topic for us that harkens back to our old extinction episode series.

0:42.7

Back when we used to talk about mass extinctions, we talked a lot about the boundaries between geologic time periods.

0:48.6

This is kind of like those.

0:51.8

Are we talking about a mass extinction?

0:53.7

Maybe. Stay tuned and find out.

0:56.3

Only further research will tell whether this episode is like those.

1:00.4

That is very true. We're going to talk about what makes this particular band of time,

1:07.1

particularly interesting, sort of some of the geological history, the scientific history of what we've

1:13.2

been able to tell and what big questions there are.

1:17.1

This is an unusual bound.

1:18.5

There's a lot of boundaries in Earth history where we can say, yeah, this is where the age of dinosaurs ended.

1:24.1

This is where the Ice Age began.

1:26.2

The Jurassic Cretaceous transition has a lot of

1:29.0

interesting stuff about it and a lot of big questions, such as, was there a mass extinction here?

1:35.5

Or, where is the boundary? Questions like these, we will be addressing over the course of this

episode. Seem kind of crucial questions.
